melt your headaches call it home
In a testament to how often my husband and I go grocery shopping, we ran up a $350 bill during our full-cart trip tonight. Can you say "this better last us till spring"? I knew you could. But on the plus side I now have 40 bottles of Snapple!

Shut up, I'm allowed to be excited about stupid things.

This is how I'll get everyone other than [info]loveyouallwrong into comics:

http://livingbetweenwednesdays.com/?p=3033

Who needs to read Battle for the Cowl to catch up on the last year of Batman developments when it's so lovingly illustrated in crayon, right? Tim DrakeWayne's "Aw. :(" is my favorite part.

This is how I'll get [info]loveyouallwrong into them:

http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/01/04/exclusive-lady-gaga-gets-a-bio-comic-and-we-have-your-first-look/

Hell yeah Lady GaGa gets a comic! Check out that Patrick Nagel-esque stylizing on the cover and everything. Who can resist a line that promises things like "Future issues will feature such personalities as Robert Pattinson, 50 Cent, David Beckham and Taylor Swift"? I ask you, who deserves his own bio comic more than Robert Pattinson? And think how jealous Kanye West is going to be when Lady GaGa, 50 Cent, and Taylor Swift all have their own comic books.

how long can we just look? (pot:inukai)
I'm kind of trying a modified version of Get Your Words Out or whatever that comm is, where it's modified in that I'm going for a daily word count (well, close enough to daily), but I'm just privately tracking it instead of being culpable in a group setting. Anyway, I'm once again cursing myself for not believing that Write or Die would work for me sooner. I have no idea why; I'm scarily competitive and I know I'm my own worst competition. Of course a screen going from white to pink to red with the looming threat of my words being eaten spurs me on. I've been going for 30 minutes a day, but my average word count is more than 850 words in a half hour. That doesn't sound like much on its own, but that's something like 24,000 words a month if I do it every day, which is nearly 10,000 words over my personal monthly goal. Crazy.

Anyway, obviously that's another of my semi-resolutions. I call them that because if I fail at them, I'm going to shrug and move onto something else instead of taking the route of self-flagellation. One of my others is to only sign-up for exchange fests that I'd predetermined before the year started. Unfortunately, this means [info]no_tags (a bandom, quick flashfic exchange) is out, so I'll just have to look forward to reading the results, but on the bright side that means the [info]greekrow Valentine's Day Fic Exchange is in because [info]stealstheashes told me about it last year and I'd already decided to do it! Everyone in Greek fandom should so we can all briefly stop complaining about how there's no more fic to read now that the [info]yuletide fics have been posted. Very briefly. :D

Oh, and I might as well say what I've been working on, too! It's my fic for the [info]inukai_exchange, which means I've been wallowing in PoT canon again, and man, I still love it so much. I always forget until I remember, you know? Like, I know it lowers my sanity by at least half, but this is really romantic to me, and this too, and even this. This isn't, but it needs to be an icon. Where does Atobe get those wonderful toys?

Recs post

aging backwards & eating ribs (tyv:ryan)
Day 3 of the new year. How's everyone doing on their resolutions? I still haven't eaten a mango, but I'm okay on the others I made. One of my fannish ones is to comment and rec more, since I got into the bad habit of really enjoying stories and then not commenting at all, which is one of those things I don't mind in others, but hate in myself. I used to be really good about it, too.

But anyway, have some bandom recs. They're all fics from [info]popoffacork; I'll edit in authors when reveals go up at the end of the week.

- So This is the New Year, Ryan/Brendon, NC-17, 37,000 words - Oh, this made me so happy, and if the fic for me hadn't been so amazing, it totally would have been the best fic I've read in forever. It's a sci-fi dystopian AU, set on an Earth where energy beings sort of run the whole planet. Brendon's just a dude working in a music store until he finds a guy hiding underneath his kitchen table. Dystopias are the best. The BEST! You should all be writing them all the time.
- We Were Dreamers Not So Long Ago, Jon/Ryan, NC-17 - Not sure on the word count, but it fits in one post. This is a really nice futurefic, where Jon buys a cabin (that Ryan describes as a shack), and they get snowed in. Two of my favorite tropes in one, and I really like the way both Jon and Ryan come off here. They're both kind of pains in the ass, but in a charming way.
- Maybe again, William/Travis, R, 1400 words - This is nice. It's set after Travis comes out of rehab, and has flashbacks and a sweet promise of what's to come. I was really surprised to realize how short it was. I love fics like that.
- As in Olden Days, Ryan/Spencer, NC-17 - Something else without word count, but all in one post. More futurefic! Spencer's in Vegas for Christmas and getting all nostalgic, so he spur-of-the-moment calls Ryan and asks him to come. Surprisingly Ryan does and then it's all adorable tension and making out against washing machines. So very cute.

And again if you haven't yet, read the fic for me: That Promist Ayde the Tempest to Withstand. I've already read it three times. /o\

Also, I have one DC comics rec, from [info]jbbs, which already had their reveals:

- You Are Cordially Invited, Young Justice gen, PG, 3700 words by [info]kirax2 - Kon throws a YJ reunion set in present-day canon! Which you can totally do now that Kon and Bart aren't dead anymore! Just adorable and Tim gets Cassie/Kon hugs, which we all know he needs.

I went in and edited all the authors into my Yuletide recs post, too. [info]janet_carter, [info]lauriegilbert, and [info]lordessrenegade are sneaky sneaks. I had no idea I was reccing them.

end of decade

  • Jan. 2nd, 2010 at 7:12 PM
then it eats our brains :( (gen: roomba)
I ignored those end-of-decade lists because I hate all end-of-the-year lists and the decade lists are just those TIMES TEN. Unfortunately, that meant avoiding most of my usual trashy pop culture blogs because that's all they were covering, but I got to play catch-up today and that was a lot of fun.

Some stuff I liked:
- Hitler Downfall parody with Castle Wolfenstein - There are a ton of these parodies, but none of them incorporate the subtitle "prepare my Mecha-Suit for battle."
- Monkey + Puppy - If you get a puppy, beware of guard monkey.
- Wolverine and Cyclops trade powers - Now I love Scott, but the last thing he needs is to be more useless.
- NBC Thursday night promo - The Community part is the best: Ken Jeong used to be a doctor; Joel McHale used to be a doctor of love.
- New Year's Resolution generator - For anyone still looking for one. Mine's "eat a mango"!

Oh, and I've seen Sherlock Holmes now, and I want to see it again. :D Jude Law was awesome, but I really really liked Kelly Reilly who played Mary Morstan.

Yay, yuletide reveals!

melt your headaches call it home
My favorite time of the New Year, when Yuletide reveals are made. :D

Thank you to [info]boundbyspells and [info]htbthomas for my lovely Community fics! I really did love them both.

I wrote... a lot and I'll probably repost the text here for completeness in the next couple of days, but in the meantime, here are my fics:

The Vampire Diaries (TV version) - Better Than None at All, Bonnie & Damon gen, T, 2160 words. A big challenge, but an enjoyable one. My request was for Damon saving someone with no gain to himself, which, well, it's Damon. :D I think I did an okay job at it, though.

The Like RPF - Once Things Look Up, Z/Tennessee, T, 4454 words, WWII AU. This one was pretty obviously me, considering I didn't comment on a Like fic. I wrote this in one day. I took a pinch hit on the 22nd, thinking oh, I'll bang out 1000 words of Z and mostly ignore the prompt, but kinetikatrue's prompt for a WAC pilot AU was too intriguing to me. Much googling and frantic writing took place and I ended up with 4500 words. I think I did all right, considering the time crunch.

Greek - God Bless Us, Evan Chambers, Casey/Cappie/Evan, T, 3779 words. Wrote this one in a day, too. LOL self, what were you thinking? Well, I know exactly what I was thinking: I WANT TO WRITE [info]stealstheashes' PROMPT AND FIX THE GREEK FINALE! So I did, and made Lea read it over and only published it when she gushed at me. :D

Community - Next Step: Blood Transfusions, Abed/Troy, G, 308 words. Mistletoe Yuletide treat for [info]loveyouallwrong! I love her and I love them and this is what came out.

Macdonald Hall - A Grand Gesture Involving Piranhas, Cathy/Diane, G, 280 words. Yuletide means Mac Hall and this year is no different. :D I think this means Mac Hall finally qualifies as one of my remix fandoms now. It only took me about four years.

In case you're adding in your head, I wrote over 10,000 words for Yuletide. It was a pretty good year as far as distribution of pairings/characters go: I wrote gen, two femslash fics, one slash fic, and one het threesome fic.

Oh, and just for the record? If you hide your hit counts as your normal preferences, it also hides them when you post anonymously, which I should have figured but didn't until I saw one of my fics when I was logged out. You know, for future reference if anyone's not trying to leave an anonymous trail of breadcrumbs.
was it dysentery? (p!atd: brendon/ryan)
Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you're all recovering nicely and not already breaking your resolutions. I ate a lot of food and played a lot of Beatles Rock Band and even sneaked a bite of guacamole without dying (avocado allergy, for those who don't know), so I'm considering it a successful evening.

I also just got done reading the most amazing fic ever. It's the fic written for me for [info]popoffacork, and I'd fully intended on waiting to make a full recs post after I'd read through everything I wanted to read through (my ten or so open tabs are waiting for me), but this one was so wonderful that I had to rec it immediately.

That Promist Ayde the Tempest to Withstand, Brendon/Ryan (background Z/Ryan, Jon/Ryan, Z/Tennessee, Jon/Cassie, others), NC-17 - It's a marriage of convenience AU set in faerie, and it has everything I could want: a love story, politics, magic, music, terrific world-building, and obviously fantastic writing. And it's long, too.

I spent most of my morning just slowly reading through it, not wanting it to end, and it's a good thing I didn't have time to open any of the fest fics last night because I would have been ignoring the other people in my house ringing in the new year.

Seriously, go, read, review. It'll make you happy.
was it dysentery? (p!atd: brendon/ryan)
More end of the year WIP Amnesty. This is Brendon/Ryan sex pollen porn set during the cabin days. Or rather, it's all of the sexy lead-up and a bit of the porn.

Nature Boy, Brendon/Ryan, implied GSF, R, 1200 words. Warnings: dubious consent and a never-to-be finished WIP

When Brendon finds him, Ryan is curled up on the couch, an ancient afghan thrown over his legs. His eyes are half-closed and he's petting his own face. )
fancy flowers (patd: ryan/spencer)
The WIP Amnesty I promised all of you! I started writing this about a year ago, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm never going to finish it, but it's 10,500 words, so it seems like a waste to never put it anywhere. It's Ryan/Spencer, where Spencer is having a bit of a whatever crisis happens before you turn 30. He's recently divorced and has joint custody of his son, and he's just messed up enough that he winds up letting Ryan take care of him for once. I fully admit that last part was my motivation for the fic. I threw my outline at the end so it's not left on a total cliffhanger.

I had really planned on finishing it, but it's so obviously a pre-split canon fic that I couldn't figure out how to salvage it and lost my motivation. Which is too bad because I actually like my writing here, and if you've ever talked with me about my writing, you'll know how unusual that is. Ash is the only person who's read it so far and I hope she won't be too disappointed by me giving up on it. :D

God, I hope this fits in one LJ post.

Offbeat, Ryan/Spencer, 10,500 words, R, NEVER TO BE FINISHED WIP

(Late) Yuletide Recs

melt your headaches call it home
I haven't gotten around to reading anyone else's Yuletide recs because I've been unbelievably busy and the archive is slow so I barely got through the stuff I wanted to read by sight alone, but here's some stuff I liked.

First, for me! I got not one, but two Community fics, one full-length and one Yuletide treat:

Ragged Edges, various permutations of Annie/Abed/Troy and Jeff/Annie, M, 3600 words by [info]boundbyspells - Really cute! I didn't expect to get both Annie/Abed/Troy and Jeff/Annie when I said I'd be fine with either of them, but I'm happy I got them. I like the idea of Annie finding herself a lot.

Friendly Rivalry, Abed/Troy & Annie/Troy, G, 410 words by [info]htbthomas - Annie and Abed fighting over Troy by proving how much trivia they know about him! :D Such a cute little moment between them and Troy cracked me up.

Other recs:

13 more recs in 11 different fandoms )

Later today, WIP amnesty. The time to stop fooling myself is over. :D

Holiday Spirit: We're Full of It

you lose (qwantz)
Merry Christmas, everyone! I had a more successful lead-up to the holiday than I usually do; I managed to get out all of my Christmas cards on time, I didn't forget to buy anyone a gift, I got all the way through Christmas Eve dinner, and I wrote so many [info]yuletide fics and treats that [info]sodamnquirky couldn't help laughing at me today. She also proposed an ultimate crossover that I'll have to detail once reveals go up after the New Year.

Thanks to all of you for being your wonderful selves. Some days I have no idea what I'd do without you. ♥

And thank you, suspiciously lowercase person for my new snowflake cookie in my profile!

In case anyone didn't see, there were some problems with the final deluge of [info]yuletide pinch hits. If you want any of the ones that already went out, you have to email the alternate address in that link, and they're still not sure how the second half are going to go out. Of course it would be Yahoo! that turns out to be the pain in the ass in a year with an entirely new system. :D

Wow, it's been a long time since I last updated. Um, I'm alive. Clearly. Behind on some stuff, but around. I uploaded my Yuletide fic this morning, nicely sidestepping any of the server problems. \o/ I've been working on my [info]popoffacork fic, looking over some people's Yuletide letters for possible stocking stuffers, finishing my shopping and holiday cards, reading a lot, and looking at this picture of Ryan Ross.

Let's see, what else...

Oh! I went to an unofficial reunion/holiday get-together for my high school musicals. It was weird and fun! Everyone looked almost exactly as I remember them, especially the girls, since none of them have receding hairlines. I finally went AWOL on almost all my high school friends about six years ago, and there were some people I hadn't seen at all since I was 17 there, so it was awkward, but I was social and everyone remembered me. Success! It did make me miss singing a bit, though. I haven't done it for anything other than fun in a long time.

Then I went to see The Nutcracker yesterday afternoon, and that was beautiful, but didn't make me miss ballet at all. I was never a dancer at heart. :D
in a field (patd: ryan/spencer)
Oh man, [info]themoononastick wrote I want to spend the rest of my life everywhere, with everyone, one on one, always, forever, now. for me for [info]drawn_to and it's everything I could have asked for in a Ryan/Spencer (and Ryan/others) fic.

In other topics, I'm probably not going to get O Christmas Troy out of my head anytime soon. Thanks, Community.

:DDDDD

My profile page is a blizzard. Thank you, awesome people, both named and anonymous. I'm just sorry that I've been so busy that I didn't have time to reciprocate before LJ yanked away the freebie.

All to Catch a Thief
PG, 9200 words, Brendon/Ryan

Summary: Brendon's life is comatose until someone breaks into every house in town except his. A fairy tale about criminals.
A/N: AU fic written for [info]drawn_to, and inspired by the day Ryan Ross looked like this and [info]heartequals' requests for snow, bright colors, shenanigans, and no porn. I hope you like your gift! :D

- But since I am also the MTV News rock editor (and because I have spent some time with guys who may or may not actually be emo), the final say fell to me.

- I never bought into the whole "Fall Out Boy/ My Chemical Romance are emo" thing, because they might have elements of that sound but don't really fit the description.

James Montgomery wrote an article about New Moon and still managed to work in two mentions of Fall Out Boy. That, my friends, is true dedication. I can only imagine what the Pete Wentz shrine in his basement looks like. D:

Jesus, I've been jotting down things I wanted to post about and it's a laundry list now, so here have an info dump!

* The Like is looking for a new keyboardist. I don't know if that means no more Reni ever or if she's just touring with her solo stuff so she can't play backup for The Like, but Ryan let the cat out of the bag a few weeks back that she was why they canceled their NYC showcase, so it's not that surprising. Anyway, [info]yeats gave me the tip off because she thought I should audition. Lah's funny like that. Personally, I think she should audition because she's cute and sparkly and The Like probably knows Adam Lambert somehow since everyone seems to.

But seriously, how cute is that flier? GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!

I've also been listening to their cover of Elvis Costello's "You Belong to Me" and it's really hot hearing Z singing stuff like "What are you girls gonna tell your mother?" and all, but I wonder if Tennessee is ever like "My dad plays with him. Ew. :\" over it. I mean, I would be.

the rest cut for length (that's what she said?) )

So in case you haven't heard yet, [info]yuletide signups are now open! I'll write my writer a letter once assignments go out because I'm lazy and have to write more of my NaNo word count for tonight and that's just more words than I'm up to right now.

My fandoms on offer are ridiculous because I can count them on two hands and have fingers left over. Some years I've offered upward of fifty fandoms because I figured I could rewatch a movie or reread a book, but I want none of that at all. I only offered "any" characters in two fandoms and one of those fandoms only has five people listed. There's a very good chance I'll be writing femslash, which honestly has been my plan all along as I've been reading lady pairings for all sorts of fandoms, some of which I'm not even in.

The Christmas exchange fic I've started working on as the first part of my write 50,000 words in November bid is going swimmingly. I just hit the 5000 word mark and will probably try to leave off around 7000 before I go to sleep tonight. This fic was supposed to be about that long altogether... it's not. I hit a bit of a wall yesterday, so I finally outlined the rest of the fic, and the outline was three pages long and that was only what I had left. [info]stealstheashes, feel free to start laughing at me. But it's fun. My recipient had a bunch of requests that weren't at all unreasonable but not quite what I usually write, and as a result I've ended up writing a fairy tale about a bored townie and dudes who go bump in the night. I'm pretty pumped.

Okay, off to actually work on that now.

Things of Importance

  • Community gets better and better. Annie is my neurotic favorite, but Troy and Abed kill me with how adorable they are, too. I'm also disturbed by how attracted I am to Joel McHale in a cowboy outfit. Watching The Soup is going to be weird this week.

  • I gave up on Melrose Place and now I think I'm dropping FlashForward. I will give up The Vampire Diaries when you pry it from my cold, dead hands. Speaking of, last night's episode was greaaaaat. I guess I shouldn't be surprised I'm enjoying a Kevin Williamson show in its first season so much, but it's more than I thought I would.

  • I think [info]popoffacork signups are closing in about two hours, so get on that. Also, if anyone's still into Prince of Tennis, specifically Inui/Kaidoh, my darling [info]prillalar is running a InuKai fic exchange. Give Linds, Hal, or me an excuse to write Inui shopping for baby clothes.

  • I want [info]yuletide signups to open now now now. I'm so sick of the build-up.

  • I'm not doing Nano properly, but I am going to do the word count version. 50,000 words of whatever in 30 days and with four fic fests plus two Greek fics I'm working on, I have plenty to fill that quota. Anyone feel like talking about their Nano projects?

please forget to go down (patd)
[info]yuletide nominations are closed now, which means signups will start in a couple of days. \o/ Has anyone else been stalking the nomination page, watching the fandom count go up and up and up? Fascinating.

I nominated Greek, The Like RPF, Community, The Vampire Diaries, Razia's Shadow, and Whip It, and find it so very unfair that I'll only be able to make requests in four fandoms. Not that I don't have my signup all written out already because I do. Anyone who's sort of waffling on Yuletide, I firmly believe everyone should give it a try at least once. The minimum word count is only 1000 words and unlike, oh, every other fic fest, the average word count of the final product isn't much higher than that. This will be my sixth Yuletide and I think about 6000 words is the most I've ever written. My encouragement goes double if you're in one of my very tiny upstart fandoms.

Speaking of one of the tiny upstart fandoms I nominated for Yuletide, you can all look at [info]cest_what's picspam for The Like for inspiration! That's my attempt at more vocal happiness over what a chunk of my friends list has been up to. I've been quietly happy a lot, though.

On a not Yuletide-related note, I found this buried deep within my drafts folder and now I want to write around it:

Brendon freezes up, visible in his whole body starting at his shoulders, and it makes Ryan's stomach ache to look at him. Brendon just doesn't have that thing, that whatever it is that makes some people delighted in other people's misery. Ryan is a little jealous of that.

I hope I didn't already use it in a fic! But I don't think I did.
